中級：英語でメディア論、メディア論で英語Intermediate: Introduction to Media Studies in Plain English

誤解が起きるのは、あなたのせいではありません

毎年これが起きるのには、理由が3つあります。

• 科目名に「メディア論」が2回出てきます。「中級：英語でメディア論、メディア論で英語」。名詞が2回出れば、内容の講義に見えます
• シラバスの到達目標は、上から5つが全部「メディア論の内容」です。英語を使う話はその下に埋もれています。上から順に読んで、最後まで読む人は多くありません
• シラバス末尾の注意書きは、英語で書いてあります。「大幅に改変された」「楽単という噂は古い」と書いてあります。ただ、その英語を正確に読める人は、そもそも誤解しません。読めない人にこそ必要な注意が、届いていない

だから同じことを、日本語で、シラバスの外に、履修登録の期間中に読める場所に書いておきます。それがこのページです。

The course title and the order of the syllabus goals may give the impression that this is primarily a media studies lecture. The first five goals concern media content, while the English language goals appear later. The explanation of the interactive format is also written in English, which may make it less accessible to students who most need that information. This page therefore explains the format in Japanese so that you can make an informed decision before enrolling.

迷っている人は、まず第1回に出てから決めてください。

Before registering, please note that every class includes speaking activities in pairs and groups. You will also practice reading aloud and pronunciation outside class using the app, for about 10–15 minutes a day. Work outside class, including your practice record, accounts for 40% of your grade. If you are unsure whether to enroll, attend the first class before deciding.

この授業が終わるころにはWhat You Will Be Able to Do

できるようになることを、CEFR という枠組みで書いています。この授業の想定レベル帯は A2 から B1 です。左の列がCEFRの区分、▸ の行が「どこでやるか」です。

左の列の語は、こういう意味です。受容＝読む・聞くで受け取る。産出＝話す・書くで自分から出す。やりとり＝相手と交互にやる。仲介＝受け取ったものを、別の人に渡し直す。言語資源＝語彙や発音など、使う道具。自律＝自分で練習を組み立てる。くわしくは CEFRという物差し にあります。

The course goals are based on the CEFR. The left column identifies the type of language activity, and the ▸ line shows where you will practice it in this course.

各授業では、これらを授業内外の課題や、学習・訓練のアクティビティでできるようにしていきます。評価は、目に見える形のものを通して数値化します。

You will develop these skills through class activities and independent study. Assessment is based on demonstrated performance.

受容	メディア論の基本的な考え方について、英語で書かれた短い説明を読んで、主張の骨格をつかめる▸ 内容の回のミニ講義／アプリの ReadingRead a short explanation of a media studies concept in English and identify its main argument.
受容	教員やクラスメイトが英語で説明するのを聞いて、要点を追える▸ 内容の回
仲介	英語で読んだ・聞いた内容を、このテーマを知らない人にも英語で説明できる。この授業がいちばん力を入れるところです▸ 準備の回の冒頭／アプリの Pronunciation で説明の型を音読して固めるExplain information you have read or heard in English to someone unfamiliar with the topic.
仲介	見た動画や読んだ記事の内容を、自分の言葉でまとめて他人に伝えられる▸ Summarize something you have watched or read in your own words.
産出	学んだ理論を、自分の言葉で30秒から1分で説明できる▸ 内容の回の後半、ペアで
産出	授業で扱った概念について、身近な例を1つ挙げて3〜5文で書ける▸ 毎回のミニレポート
やりとり	相手の説明が分からなかったとき、聞き返したり言い換えたりして会話を続けられる▸ 全回のペア・グループ活動／TA配置回は教員とTAとのやり取り
言語資源	メディア論の基本語彙を、意味だけでなく音と使い方ごと使える
自律	自分の弱点を把握して、週の練習量を自分で決められる

繰り返し使う練習Regular practice activities

以下は繰り返し使う練習です。その回の目的とクラスの様子に合わせて、組み合わせと量を変えます。

Regular activities include reading in meaningful chunks, imitating model recordings, identifying changes in connected speech, responding and asking follow-up questions, remembering key points from a partner’s comments, and gradually developing your self-introduction. The combination and amount of practice will vary according to the class. The pages on English sounds, chunking, and introductions explain these activities.

どこへ向かうかCourse progression

授業の構成Course Structure

第5回からは、二種類の回が交互に来ます。

From session 5 onward, two kinds of session alternate.

内容の回 Content 5・7・9・11・13・15	メディア論のテーマを英語で扱います。メディアを学ぶ意味、マスコミュニケーションの諸理論、コミュニケーションのモデル、グローバルなメディア、マクルーハンなどMedia studies themes in English: why study media, theories of mass communication, models of communication, global media, McLuhan.
準備の回 Preparation 6・8・10・12・14	前の内容を短く説明し直したり、具体例について話したりします。その回で一度試し、伝わりにくかったところを直す練習と、次回の語彙・表現の準備を組み合わせますPractise explaining previous material or talking about an example, try again after checking what was unclear, and prepare vocabulary and expressions for the next topic.

第1回はオリエンテーションと初期の確認。そのあとの数回は、英語の音、発音、学習のしかたなど、これから使う練習の型を扱います。何回かかるかはクラスによります。
Session 1: orientation and an initial check of your English. Sessions 2 to 4: foundation building.

語彙クイズについて：シラバスには「毎回の授業のはじめに語彙クイズ」と書きましたが、実施しません。不人気だったのと、クイズがあってもなくても語彙を増やす作業はあるからです。
The syllabus lists a vocabulary quiz at the start of each session. It will not be run. It was unpopular, and vocabulary work happens either way.

学習プラットフォームThe Learning Platform

初めての人は、第1回の授業で登録の方法を説明します。
Log in to the learning platform. If you have not registered yet, registration is explained in the first session.

担当教員が作ったAI英語学習アプリを使います。授業の外で音読や発音の練習をすると、その場で自動でフィードバックが返ります。自分の進み具合は、いつでも自分の画面で見られます。

You will use an AI English learning app developed by the instructor. It provides immediate automated feedback on your practice outside class. You can view your own practice records and progress at any time.

登録の方法は第1回の授業で説明します。事前の準備は要りません。
Registration is explained in the first session. Nothing to set up in advance.

授業外の学習がいちばん大きい配分です。授業に出るだけでは単位は取れません。
Work outside class is the largest single component. Showing up is not enough.

向いている人、そうでない人Is This Course for You

向いています

• 英語を読めるだけでなく、使えるようにしたいYou want to use English, not only read it.
• 間違えてもいいから、声を出す練習をしたいYou are willing to speak English even when you make mistakes.
• メディアや情報の仕組みに関心があるYou are curious about how media and information work.

向いていないかもしれません

• 話さずに単位を取りたいYou expect to earn credit without speaking English.
• 授業時間の中だけで終わらせたいYou expect to complete all coursework during class time.

英語が得意である必要はありません。必要なのは、練習を続けることだけです。迷っている人は、第1回に出てから決めてください。第1回はオリエンテーションに加え、短い練習も試します。第2回も案内と確認を続けながら、練習を始めます。

You do not need to be good at English. You need to keep practising. If you are undecided, come to the first session and decide afterwards. Session 1 combines orientation with short practice. Session 2 continues the orientation while introducing further practice.

目安となる英語力：TOEFL-ITP 425から530程度。あくまで目安です。

持ち物What to Bring

• ノートパソコンかタブレット。毎回必要ですA laptop or tablet, every session. A smartphone alone is not enough.

12	準備	冒頭：第11回の内容を英語で説明／モデルを実際のメディアに当てはめてみる
13	内容	グローバルな視点　Media Imperialism／Globalization and Media／Political Economy of Media CEFR がなぜ世界標準になったのか、という話もここで扱います。この回の問いはこれです。 Where does the English you are learning come from, and who benefits from you learning it? （あなたが学んでいる英語はどこから来て、あなたが学ぶことで誰が得をするのか）
