Assessment methods and Hokkaido University’s grading criteria

This page explains the grading criteria in the official syllabus and the related course rules. Please read them before registering. Criteria for individual assignments will be provided with the task instructions. The overall grading breakdown is shown below.

Grading breakdown

40% 30% 30%

Weightings differ by course. Outside-class learning, including your activity record in the learning app, accounts for 40% in the media studies seminar and 30% in each of the other two courses. In those two courses, participation also accounts for 30%.

Can Doと成績評価Can-do achievement and grades

Can-do achievement is considered at every grade level. Evidence comes from assignments, class activities, portfolios and learning records. Achievement is assessed through the criteria for each task and contributes to the grading weights above; it is not a separate gate applied only to A grades. A+ indicates achievement of all can-do goals, with outstanding quality and evidence of sustained practice, improvement and growth. A indicates excellent achievement across the goals; A− indicates excellent achievement in most areas with some room for improvement. Grades in the B range reflect differences in the breadth, quality and consistency of achievement. Grades in the C range require the minimum learning outcomes for a pass, although some target can-do goals remain unmet. Effort alone does not establish a passing grade. D means the evidence does not establish the learning outcomes required to pass, including cases where work has not been undertaken or submitted. Neither CEFR levels nor the number or percentage of completed can-do statements is automatically converted into a grade. Specific task criteria and the syllabus weights determine scores.

Borderline grades
