Media studies materials organized by topic
Materials are organized by topic because the schedule may change as the course progresses. We will not necessarily cover every item in class. Some are provided for further viewing and independent study.

Three Questions to Keep in Mind
1. WHO?
Who owns this media? Who profits? Who decides what stories get told?
2. WHERE?
Where does the information flow FROM and TO? (Global North → Global South? Or the reverse?)
3. WHAT’S MISSING?
What perspectives, voices, or stories are NOT being shown? Why?
“Am I outside this system, or part of it?”
There are no simple answers, only better questions.
Use the following three questions to guide your reading and viewing.
Why Study Media
This section introduces the scope of media studies and its theoretical and philosophical foundations. Three readings, including Chapter 1 of Critical Media Studies, will be provided in class.
Agenda-Setting and Effects Theories
ほかに Spiral of Silence(沈黙の螺旋)、Hypodermic Needle(皮下注射モデル)、Limited Effects(限定効果)、Two-Step Flow(コミュニケーションの二段の流れ)を扱います。
This section introduces agenda-setting theory, the spiral of silence, the hypodermic needle model, limited-effects approaches, and the two-step flow of communication. Agenda-setting concerns the influence of media on which issues receive public attention.
Propaganda
What is propaganda? | Jason Stanley / Explain It Like I’m SmartBig Think
Why obvious lies make great propagandaVox
You’re Not Immune To PropagandaSecond Thought
Devil’s Advocate: Why worry about fascism? | Jason StanleyBig Think
This section examines propaganda, why false claims can be persuasive, and why confidence in our own judgment does not necessarily protect us from manipulation.
The Propaganda Model
Herman & Chomsky。
Herman and Chomsky’s propaganda model describes five filters that shape news production. It explains structural influences on news rather than assuming that each editorial decision follows a direct order.
Encoding / Decoding / Stuart Hall
Dominant |
Negotiated |
Oppositional |
Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model examines the relationship between meanings produced in a message and meanings interpreted by audiences. The examples illustrate dominant, negotiated, and oppositional readings based on viewers’ knowledge and values.
Media Ownership and Political Economy

This section examines media ownership, financing, and their implications for media content. It addresses the question of who produces and controls information.
Cultural Imperialism and Globalization
Cultural ImperialismThe Oxford Review

Cultural Imperialism: Definition & Examples / StudySmarter↗
This section examines the direction of international flows of information and culture.
The Medium Is the Message / McLuhan

The Medium is the MessageBBC Radio 4
Marshall McLuhan / Digital PropheciesAl Jazeera English
This Is Marshall McLuhan / The Medium Is The Massage (1967)Reelblack One
McLuhan directs attention to how the characteristics of a medium shape communication and social life. The examples compare print, television, and smartphones, including their different demands on attention and patterns of use.
Simulacra and Hyperreality / Baudrillard
