Course rules and expectations

Last updated 9 September 2026

The university syllabus system has a character limit. This page provides further details about the rules for all three courses.

Ground Rules

If you need additional support or accommodations, please contact the instructor so that we can discuss your needs.
Please take this course seriously. I will do what I can to help you learn.
If your behavior seriously disrupts other students, you may be asked to leave the classroom. Please follow the instruction to leave.
If you are confused, please ask, even if you are not sure how to explain what you do not understand. I cannot help unless you tell me. Helping you work through these difficulties is part of my job.

What participation involves

You are expected to attend every class and take part in the activities. In a language seminar, participation includes speaking, writing, asking questions, and taking notes, including photographing instructions on slides. Work unrelated to the class is not permitted without prior permission. If you do unrelated work, I may address it directly in front of the class rather than giving you a separate warning.

Seating

Seats will be assigned in the first or second class. In the English Seminar, seating is arranged at the beginning of the semester and changed around the midpoint. In the Productive Skills and repeat courses, seating changes about once a month.

Changing seats gives you a fresh start and opportunities to work with classmates whose personalities differ from yours. Language learning involves communicating with other people, including people whose responses you cannot predict or whom you find difficult to work with. The aim is to learn to communicate with them without conflict. You may also make new friends.

Lateness and Leaving the Room

Two late arrivals count as one absence.
Arriving more than 20 minutes late without a valid reason counts as an absence.
Please tell the instructor before entering or leaving during class. If you feel unwell, let the instructor know before leaving.

Conversation during class

Light chat during group work is fine.

Casual conversation in English is welcome, even when the topic is unrelated to the lesson. Being able to continue a conversation beyond the textbook is an important language skill. The instructor will intervene if you stop using English altogether.

If you keep talking about unrelated matters for too long, I may speak to you in front of the class. Please use your judgment about when to return to the activity.

Phones, Laptops, Tablets

Do not use your devices for games, social media, or other activities unrelated to the class. The instructor moves around the classroom during activities. If you are observed doing unrelated work, you will be marked absent without a prior warning. Hiding your phone when the instructor approaches does not change this rule.

Food and Drink

Light snacks are allowed unless food and drink are prohibited in the classroom. You may also drink coffee. Avoid excessive consumption of energy drinks. Be considerate of others when bringing food with a strong smell, take care not to spill drinks, and take your rubbish with you.

In Person

These are in-person courses. Remote arrangements are made only where the university’s formal accommodation process has been followed.

Attendance

Attendance will be taken by roll call. Please respond when your name is called. These courses do not use the ELMS six-digit attendance code, because codes can easily be shared with students who are not in the classroom. If you arrive after roll call, tell the instructor yourself; otherwise, you will remain marked absent. The lateness rules above apply. Students taking the repeat course must attend the first class and follow the separate instructions issued at the beginning of the semester.

Assignments and Deadlines

Deadlines are listed on each class page. Late work will not be accepted unless you have consulted the instructor before the deadline. Submit all work through the learning platform; submissions by email are not accepted. Check the submission status on your screen to make sure your work has been received. If a system problem prevents submission, contact the instructor immediately. You will not be penalized for a system failure.

Work Outside Class

One credit represents 45 hours of study. A two-credit course with 15 classes therefore requires an average of six hours of study per class: 1.5 hours in class and 4.5 hours of preparation and review. Work outside class accounts for 30–40% of your grade, depending on the course. If you do not complete it, you lose the corresponding credit. You will submit evidence of your practice and have opportunities to explain what you have worked on. Superficial practice is apparent in your reading aloud and speaking, and limits your own progress. Students often find it harder to maintain their practice around November, when assignments in other courses accumulate. I will provide support at that stage, but you remain responsible for completing your work. There is no upper limit on how much you may practice.

Using Generative AI

Generating your own text for read-aloud practice.
Getting feedback on pronunciation and phrasing.
Having AI transcribe something you said yourself.
Revising your own writing. Keep the pre-revision version as well.
Using it as a conversation partner.
Asking for explanations of grammar and usage you do not understand.

Submitting AI-generated text without reviewing and evaluating it yourself.
Submitting AI-generated audio as your own reading.

The two restrictions serve different purposes. You may use AI when writing, but you must review the content and make your own decisions about it. For an oral reading submission, the recording must be of your own voice, because the task assesses your ability to read aloud. AI-generated speech cannot demonstrate that ability. Before submitting a text, check whether you can explain what it means and why you chose the words you used.

Learning Platform

Log in to the learning platform. If you have not registered yet, registration is explained in the first session.

The instructor can view which app features you use, how much you use them, and the feedback you receive from AI. These learning records are needed to assess work that contributes to your grade. Your individual content will not be shown to other students or used for public comparisons. Class statistics may be discussed without identifying individuals. Any use of these records for research will be explained separately and will require your consent. Choosing not to consent will have no effect on your grade.

Academic Misconduct

Academic misconduct includes submitting another person’s work or recording as your own, copying text without acknowledging its source, and recording attendance when you were absent. Suspected cases will be checked and handled in accordance with university regulations. These assignments are intended to develop your own skills. Copying someone else’s work does not give you the practice you need.

最後にFinally

These rules set out the basic expectations for maintaining a suitable learning environment. Although they do not each carry a separate formal penalty, failure to follow them may affect the assessment of your participation and your grade. Serious disruption will be handled with reference to Hokkaido University regulations. The instructor may adjust the rules or make individual arrangements as circumstances require. Please read them carefully so that you understand what is expected. This page may be updated during the semester; the date above will indicate any update.
