授業の目標Course Objectives

この授業は、メディア研究の基礎知識（マスコミュニケーション理論、メディアと社会の関係）を扱いながら、英語力を鍛えます。担当教員の専門領域に重点を置いて、メディアの理論と実践を検討します。

英語力の向上に加えて、メディアに関する基礎知識を英語で身につけることを目指します。最終的な目標は、メディアに関する情報に英語でアクセスし、学術的な水準で議論できるようになることです。

受け身で聞く講義科目ではありません。毎回、英語で読み、聞き、話し、書きます。これらの活動に前向きに取り組める学生に向けた授業です。

この授業の特徴のひとつが、担当教員が独自に開発したAI搭載の英語学習アプリケーションです。授業外で音読と発音の練習ができ、音声認識技術による即時の自動フィードバックと、AIによる個別の改善提案が得られます。教員は専用のダッシュボードで各学生の学習進捗を把握し、必要に応じて個別指導を行います。

TAが配置される回では、TAと教員の双方と英語で積極的にやり取りする機会があり、実践的な英語力をさらに伸ばせます。TAが配置されない場合は、代替のインタラクティブな活動を実施します。

This course develops English language skills through an introduction to media studies, including mass communication theory and the relationship between media and society. Students will learn to access and discuss media-related information in English. Every class involves reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The instructor’s AI learning app supports oral reading and pronunciation practice outside class, with automated feedback and suggestions for improvement. The instructor reviews learning records and provides individual guidance as needed. When a teaching assistant is available, students will also have opportunities to practice English with the TA. Other interactive activities will be used when no TA is assigned.

到達目標Course Goals

この授業を終えるとき、学生は次のことができるようになります。

1. メディア研究の主要な論点と抽象的な概念を、この分野の主要言語である英語で理解できるUnderstand key issues and abstract concepts in media studies in English, the dominant language in the field.
2. 日常生活におけるメディアの影響を認識し、自分がどう応じるべきかを考えられるRecognize the impact of media in everyday life and contemplate appropriate personal responses.
3. メディアに関する理論的枠組みの意義と役割を、実社会と学術の両方の文脈で把握できるGrasp the significance and role of theoretical frameworks related to media in both real-world and academic contexts.
4. メディア理論の主要テーマを総合的に学ぶことで、人文社会科学における今後の研究と学習の基礎を築けるLay the foundation for future research activities and learning in the humanities and social sciences.
5. メディアとは何かを自分の言葉で定義し、メディアと社会の関係を理解して、個人としてどう行動すべきかを判断できるDefine what media is in their own terms and understand the relationship between media and society, making informed decisions about how individuals should act accordingly.
6. 英語の音声・文字情報から内容を理解したうえで、それを英語で簡潔に伝え、共有できるUnderstand spoken and written information in English, then convey the main points clearly and concisely.
7. 訳語中心の語彙学習から脱却し、音声・意味・統語の情報を統合した語彙能力と、実際に使える文法・語法を身につけられるLearn vocabulary through its pronunciation, meaning, and use in sentences, and develop grammar and usage skills that can be applied in communication.

受講者数、進行具合、学生の英語力に応じて、内容と日程を調整することがあります。英語でのコミュニケーションに苦戦する場合は、活動内容を変更することがあります。TA配置回では、TAや教員とのディスカッションや質疑応答といった実践的な活動を含めます。生成AIも、より効果的な言語習得のために使用します。

Content and scheduling may be adjusted according to enrollment, progress, and students’ English proficiency. Sessions with a teaching assistant will include discussion and questions. Generative AI will also be used to support language practice.

準備学習（予習・復習）の内容と分量Homework

全学共通文言

積極的かつ主体的な準備学習（予習・復習）が求められる。準備学習への取り組み方全般については、学期はじめに担当教員から説明があるほか、各回の授業で求められる準備学習の具体的な内容については、学期中随時教員から指示がある。また履修者が自ら主体的に計画と目標を立て、自律的に準備学習に取り組むことも強く期待される。準備学習を十分に行わなければ、身につけるべき内容を消化できず、単位も取得できなくなる可能性があるので、真剣かつ計画的に取り組んでほしい。

この授業固有の要件

• 各回の前に授業専用サイト／ポートフォリオサイトにアクセスし、授業外課題の詳細と授業内活動の説明を確認すること。何が求められているかを事前に理解しておくこと
• 課題は指定された締切までに提出すること。事前の相談がない遅れは受け付けない
• 提出物以外の授業外の学習も、各回ごとにポートフォリオに記録し、教員と共有すること
• 授業内で行うグループ訓練・個別訓練の練習と復習を行うこと
• AI学習アプリを使った音読・発音練習を継続的に行うこと。利用状況と進捗は記録され、個別フィードバックが提供される。1日10〜15分でも、たまに長時間やるよりはるかに効果的です
• 高等教育の認定基準では、1単位は45時間の学習を前提とする。この科目は15回で2単位なので、各回平均6時間の学習を前提とする。授業時間が1回約1.5時間なので、各回4.5時間の予習・復習が想定される。これは誇張ではありません。そのつもりで予定を組んでください

語彙クイズについて：シラバスには「毎回の授業のはじめに語彙クイズ」と書きましたが、実施しません。不人気だったのと、クイズがあってもなくても語彙を増やす作業はあるからです。
The syllabus lists a vocabulary quiz at the start of each session. It will not be run. It was unpopular, and vocabulary work happens either way.

The first paragraph gives the university-wide expectations for preparation and review. The following requirements apply specifically to this course: check the course website before each class, submit assignments by the stated deadlines, practice regularly, and keep a record of your independent study.

テキスト・教科書Textbooks

教科書は不要です。デジタル技術と生成AIを活かした無料教材と、担当教員が構築した授業専用の簡易サイトを使います。サイトと教材の内容は、授業の進行に合わせて、受講者の提案を取り入れながら随時更新していきます。

No textbooks are required. We will use free digital materials and this course website. Materials will be updated during the semester, taking students’ suggestions into account.

備考Additional Information

• 英語力が中上級以上の学生が履修できます
• 実質的に必要な水準は TOEFL-ITP 425 から530弱程度。アメリカのコミュニティカレッジ入学の最低ライン付近です
• 毎回の授業は対話中心です。受け身の出席ではなく、英語での積極的な参加を求めます
• 身体的な条件などで受講に困難がある場合は、事前に連絡してください
• ノートパソコンまたはタブレットの持参は必須です（スマートフォンのみでの受講は推奨しません）
